Safe Routes to School

July 16, 2009

I.C. Norcom High School
1801 London Boulevard
Portsmouth, Virginia 23704

Representatives from the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School Program will be providing a workshop to instruct local stakeholders in Safe Routes to School (SRTS) basics.  SRTS is about enabling and encouraging students (in grades K-8) to walk and bicycle to school safely.  Also, the training will enhance the ability of stakeholders to develop a School Travel Plan and to implement SRTS programs.  The best SRTS programs are comprehensive in nature addressing issues of education, encouragement, enforcement, engineering and the evaluation of program results, also known as “the 5Es”.  This workshop for community audiences is designed to assist them in identifying local problems and solutions related to active transportation from home to school.  At the conclusion of the workshop participants will be able to identify next steps for their own schools and communities.

Instructors:

Jakob Helmboldt, AICP, is the State Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Transportation.  He is an instructor for the Safe Routes to School National Course which was developed by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center through a partnership with the Federal Highway Administration.

Sarah Weisiger, AICP, is the State Safe Routes to School Program Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Contact Hours: 4.0 hrs

Special Registration Instructions for Employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation

Travel expenses for all employees of VDOT will be paid from the VDOT Learning Center budget. However, registrants need to contact their District Training Office or the VDOT Learning Center (Central Office employees) for instructions on how to seek reimbursement for travel expenses. Please also note it is not sufficient to enroll in a VA LTAP workshop through the VDOT Virtual University. VDOT registrants must also complete and submit a VA LTAP registration form to the VA LTAP office.

Due to current travel restrictions, VDOT employees are strongly encouraged to attend VA LTAP workshops on a day trip basis. Overnight travel requires permission from your District Administrator or Chief -- and in some cases higher levels of authority. If you require overnight lodging to attend a VA LTAP workshop, consult with your supervisor, District Training Manager, or VDOT Learning Center on travel approval procedures.
