Low Cost Safety Improvements

May 22, 2008

Woodrow Wilson
Rehabilitation Center
292 Woodrow Wilson Lane
Fishersville, VA 22939

Each year, motor vehicle crashes on U.S. roadways claim more than 42,000 lives, cause 3 million injuries, and involve $230 billion in costs. The Federal Highway Administration and AASHTO, among others, have identified roadway safety as a high priority. The consequences of motor vehicle crashes would not be nearly so high if programs, tools, and technologies that have been developed were more extensively deployed to make roads safer for travel.

This workshop emphasizes the application of traffic control devices, enhanced traffic control device application measures, low-cost safety improvements, and their specific safety benefits in terms of crash modification factors. Signing, marking, and illumination are highlighted. The information is directly applicable to addressing requests and comments from the public.

Instructor

The instructor for this workshop is Ronald W. Eck, P.E. Ron is Professor of Civil Engineering at West Virginia University and is the Director of the West Virginia Local Technical Assistance Program. He has been involved in traffic engineering and traffic safety for over 25 years. He teaches Introduction to Traffic Engineering and Traffic Engineering Operations at WVU. He developed and teaches one-, two-, and three-day workshops on traffic engineering and related topics for LTAP centers and state highway agencies.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop should be of interest to state and local roadway agency traffic engineers, those who design and install traffic control devices, public works directors, and others involved in the roadway element of traffic safety.

Special Registration Instructions for Employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation

VA LTAP workshop registration fees and related expenses for all employees of VDOT will be paid from the VDOT Learning Center budget. VA LTAP will direct bill the VDOT Learning Center for workshop registration fees. However, registrants need to contact their District Training Office or the VDOT Learning Center (Central Office employees) for instructions on how to seek reimbursement for travel expenses. Please also note it is not sufficient to enroll in a VA LTAP workshop through the VDOT Virtual University. VDOT registrants must also complete and submit a VA LTAP registration form to the VA LTAP office.

Due to current travel restrictions, VDOT employees are strongly encouraged to attend VA LTAP workshops on a day trip basis. Overnight travel requires permission from your District Administrator or Chief -- and in some cases higher levels of authority. If you require overnight lodging to attend a VA LTAP workshop, consult with your supervisor, District Training Manager, or VDOT Learning Center on travel approval procedures.
