Intersection & Arterial Capacity Analysis

October 27-29, 2008

VDOT Northern Virginia District Training Center
14685 Avion Parkway
Chantilly, VA 20151

This course will cover analysis procedures for signalized and unsignalized intersections as well as urban arterials. Methodologies from the Highway Capacity Manual will form the central theme of the course. Both strengths and weaknesses of the HCM will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on discussing the basic principles of capacity analysis in order for the students to learn how to modify and apply the procedures to unique design issues. As part of the course, if weather permits, class participants will collect field data to be used as part of their class exercises for analyzing traffic conditions and determining levels of service. The advantages and disadvantages of software packages such as HCS, Synchro, Sidra, and Rodel will be discussed and demonstrated.

Instructor

Dane Ismart has worked with the Federal Highway Administration for 30 years in a variety of policy, planning, and engineering positions. He has authored manuals and taught NHI courses on capacity analysis, access management, travel demand forecasting, intermodal planning, and financial management.
