This session addresses basic maintenance techniques for unpaved and gravel roads, beginning with discussions on proper crown and cross-slope and the common distresses of gravel roads. We will look at road aggregate materials – what makes a good gravel road aggregate – and discuss the importance of good drainage. Discussions will then turn to basic maintenance techniques, covering blading or dragging, reshaping or regarding for proper crown, regravelling, dust control, and road stabilization. In addition, we will look at the use of Geosynthetics, particularly separation fabrics, and their advantages for gravel roads. Our attention will then turn to additional maintenance techniques covering erosion and sedimentation control, roadside vegetation, and bridges.
