Fundamentals of Concrete
Placement and Finishing for
Localities

October 21, 2008

Holiday Inn Roanoke-Tanglewood
4468 Starkey Rd SW
Salem, VA 24018

Concrete has been in widespread use in transportation structures for many decades. The material is known for its strength and durability. However, concrete sidewalks, driveways, and curb & gutter sometimes do not last as long as they should and may require expensive repairs. Shortened service life can sometimes be attributed to improper handling of concrete during the construction phase. A basic understanding of the material and how to properly place and finish it is essential to ensuring that long lasting concrete elements are built. This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of concrete with an emphasis on proper placement and finishing in common local transportation-related public works applications.

Instructor

Dr. Celik Ozyildirim, Ph.D, P.E., is a Principal Research Scientist with the Virginia Department of Transportation. He has over 30 years’ experience in concrete technology and has authored many papers and made numerous presentations on concrete ingredients, properties, production, testing, and specifications.

Dr. Ozyildirim is active in the American Concrete Institute, Transportation Research Board (TRB), and the American Society for Testing and Materials. He is a member emeritus of the TRB committee on Basic Research and Emerging Technologies and is the Task Group Chair of ASTM Committee C39, the standard test method for compressive strength of cylindrical concrete specimens. He teaches advanced concrete technology at the University of Virginia (UVa) and holds a PhD degree in Civil Engineering from UVa.

Who Should Attend?

This course is intended to provide instruction on the basic properties of concrete and proper concrete handling and installation techniques for typical local transportation-local public works applications – such as driveways, sidewalks, and curb & gutter. It is designed for concrete finishers, local road construction and maintenance supervisors, inspectors, and private contractors and producers who deal with the placement and finishing of concrete. Previous knowledge of concrete is not necessary to attend this workshop.

Registration/Payment

The public-sector fee (for government, local, and state employees) is $50 and the private-sector fee (for company employees and private consultants) is $95. The registration fee covers the session, all course materials, and meals.
