Asphalt Pavement Maintenance

September 10–11 , 2008

VDOT Lynchburg
District Office
4219 Campbell Avenue
Lynchburg, VA 24501

The objectives of this course are to convey a better understanding of the importance of preventive maintenance and repairs procedures and enable recognition of the types and causes of common distresses in asphalt pavements.

In order to maintain asphalt pavements and make long-lasting repairs, we need to understand the causes of common problems on asphalt roads and be familiar with proper maintenance methods and repairs. Common pavement distresses and understanding the causes are identified, plus recommended preventive maintenance treatments and repair procedures. Specific operations will cover crack sealing, asphalt patching, and surface treatments such as chip seals, slurry seals, and microsurfacing. Asphalt resurfacing, paver operations and proper rolling and compaction are covered as well as asphalt recycling methods.

He retired from his position as a Senior Research Assistant for Penn State University at the end of 2007 where he served as a Technology Transfer Specialist for the Institute of State and Regional Affairs working on various projects with PennDOT among others involving training and development.
